What is this? Italy?

Nope. It’s North Wales.

You’d be forgiven for the mistake; Portmerion village is a collection of brightly colored houses and grottos modeled after the Italian town of Portofino. Walking around was bizarre and delightful. My sense of place was definitely thrown off-balance, and I loved it.

Like Portofino, Portmerion is perched along the sea, affording stunning views. Maybe even more importantly, it has gelato, just like its Italian counterpart.

  1. The TV series ‘The Prisoner’ (the original from 1967/68 not the remake with Ian McKellen and James Caviezel) was filmed there. So was the location filming for the Doctor Who story ‘The Masque of Mandragora’ where it was supposed to be 15th century San Martino.

    1. Wow! That’s really neat. It seems like it would be a great place to film.
